To add dynamics to the performance, parameter automation is implemented and a modulation LFO can be assigned to all parameters.

For a real thunderstorm, integration with external gear is considered – each voice has a dedicated trigger input, individual output, and FX send and return with 6.3mm jack sockets, along with extensive MIDI implementation. All voices are summed and run through a built-in compressor.

Bullfrog is a classical subtractive synthesizer – it consists of several “modules” for sound generation – VCO, NOISE GENERATOR – and treatment – VCF, VCA/DELAY, as well as “modules” that generate control and modulation signals to control them – ENVELOPE GENERATORS and SAMPLE & HOLD. The Bullfrog will not make the sound on its own unless it is patched – using eurorack patch cables to interconnect the “modules” or by inserting voice cards that create internal connections between the “modules” in a specific way and add extra functionality, like sampler/looper, sequencer, groovebox, etc. This approach better helps to understand the functionality of a subtractive synthesizer and the principles of sound design with instruments like these.

]]> As its name suggests, the Erica Synths Black DJ VCF provides sound treatment functionality typically found on DJ decks – it is fully open when the cutoff knob is set to 12:00. When turned counter-clockwise, lowpass filtering is applied and when turned clockwise, highpass filtering is applied. The filter also has a nice-sounding resonance parameter. This module provides hands-on control over the sound during the performance, as well as unconventional timbre modulations that are hard to achieve with conventional state variable filters. The Black DJ VCF is a fully analogue design and consists of two VCFs – highpass and lowpass in series and the filter management is done by complex CV routing.
