The original Performance Mixer changed the eurorack landscape when it first came out, it made mixing much more intuitive and instant, it allowed people to ditch the heavy outboard mixer, and keep their system patched while they traveled. It made using individual drum modules and multiple voices easy to keep straight in a packed dark room. We know this because you all wrote us with praise, and with suggestions to make it better. Almost all of those suggestions have been engineered and are in the new unit, plus a few features that push the concept further.

Upgrades

• Noise Performance 2 – On the Original, the Level VCA was before the Panning VCAs, which saved on parts/power, but it meant that the Panning VCAs were always connected to the mix bus, adding noise floor that couldn’t be attenuated. Making all the channels stereo and putting the Pan circuit first eliminated this problem, now the noise add is controlled by the fader. This did force me to make every channel stereo, so the design got simpler through figuring this out.
• Panning / Crossfader – The above panning/level improvement made it possible to convert the Pan control into a crossfader, buy simply routing the post pan signals through a switch to the opposing channel, summed at the Level control. This huge improvement allowed the A/&/B input switching scheme to still work on the PM MKII, a bit differently, but its there in spirit.
• Modular Design – The channel strips are all now stereo, and identical, which makes assembly much easier, and lowers the cost. It also makes replacing them easier should a mechanical part fail or get spilled into. Further, the Patchbay, Power board, and Master section are all separate parts, so if there’s a failure, they can be quickly swapped without having to RMA the whole unit.
• Patchbay – The MKI and rev E MKII still had jacks misaligned with channels. This was a source of frustration for myself and many users of the PM MKI. And I decided to just be done with it. It didn’t make sense to try to put jacks over the channel, it wasted too much space on the panel… So all the jacks go left, keeping the mixer clear of cables, this let me space the knobs out a bit to take up all 3U. It’s cleaner, simpler to make, and intuitive to use.
• Expandability – It’s super modular now, the DB25 can connect to any two headers that spits out audio, they’re all the same format across PM MKII and Channels MKII. Pre, post, mixes, connect it however you want. And the connectors can’t be hooked to power, meaning no more blown opamps and RMAs to the factory. They’re all shrouded too so they won’t get bent in shipping!

OSD is centered around combining voltage in useful ways. Audio, V/Oct, and control voltage are at home in this utility. OSD offers a fully DC coupled signal path with precision components to make this happen. High quality, configurability, and compact size ensure OSD will always find it’s way into your patch.

– Combine v/Oct sequences with precision summing, or enable the the precision OR circuit for completely different results.

– Mix two envelopes or an envelope and lfo using sum to create large accented voltages or combine with OR to keep the output in the original range.

– Crossfade between audio or control voltage using the potentiometer in block one. Setting DIF will invert the signal at the B jack.

What is OR, SUM, and DIF

OR – Input voltages are compared and the higher of the two is passed to the output.

For example if A = 4V and B = 8V, the output will be 8V.

SUM – Input voltages are added together to create the output voltage.

For example if A= 3V and B=4V, the output will be 7V. This clips at -10V and 10V.

DIF – B voltage source is subtracted from the A voltage, producing an output of the difference between the two.

For example if A= 3V and B = 5V, the output will be 2V.

Controls / Configuration

Block 1 – Sum, OR, or Difference of two inputs and effect the mix of the A input to the B input with the Knob. The third input ORs with the result of the A/B inputs. Not a precision channel.

Block 2 – Sum, OR, or Difference of two inputs with high precision. The third input ORs with the result of the A/B inputs.

Block 3 – 3 input OR with high precision. Mix gates or CV from three sources for some wild results.

Javelin starts out as a simple ADSR envelope. We then added 3 level ranges, giving you control over the envelope’s overall amplitude. Next, 3 time ranges allow for quick switching of the feel of the envelope. These ranges were carefully designed to work with each other, making the switch a fun and playable part of the interface. Short and snappy, long and drawn out (max 88 minutes per stage with 5V in a stage’s CV input), the Javelin will suit any style of music or playing style.

Expression is key. We wanted to make the most expressive, emotional sounding envelope we possibly could. The addition of Accent and Choke inputs make for very interesting sequences that are just a couple gates away.

Like a 909 style kick drum, Crater’s analog section features a pitch envelope that ranges from snappy attacks, to lazer sounds, to disco toms. 1 volt per octave tracking and an amplitude envelope that allows users to use Crater for classic 808 style hip hop bass lines as well as rolling techno kicks.

The Digital side is where Crater really becomes unique and ultra-useful in a live performance Eurorack system.

The “secret sauce” of kick drums is usually found in layering different sounds to create a drum that cuts through the mix in the high frequencies, while remaining powerful in the lows. Many kicks you hear in dance music tracks are samples made from layering two or more sounds and we wanted to achieve this level of polished sound with our kick. The “Body” knob shapes the attack while adding adds a bit of delayed noise which simulates things in the room being affected by the kick such as loose lugs or a snare drum rattling near by. This gives the kick more of a natural and acoustic feel to the sound.
